Week 4 concluded and Some of week 5
Well, I guess I'll never be in the blog hall of fame as I don't post that often. Let's face it, I'm a terrible blogger. Oh well.
We lost on Sunday, I know not a shocker there, but we only lost to International 7 to 3. The score was 3 to 2 at the half with International leading. I think that most people agreed we controlled the first half of the game. Then our stellar lack of conditioning set in and we lost the game. A familiar story to those that attend Gunner games on a regular basis. All in all, everyone was pretty happy with this game. We could point at just a few things that were terribly broken instead of our last game where everything seemed to be broken. We had our starting line up all show up this game and I think that made a difference.
Every week we get an email from the guy who organized our team. I'll try to post them in here, so here's the first one by the way, I'm Dave H.:
Game News - Against International
We played one of the best defensive game since we started playing this
league. Our upside traps worked really well and we were able compress the
field size between the Fs and FBs. Everett really pushed the back-line
and running the backline like never before. I thought Everett and Dave H
will pass out on the field. Our throw-ins were much more effective and We
were a lot more aggressive on the goal kicks. We got the first goal of
the season and we were only down by one going into the second half. We
were able to delivered the ball to our Fs and able to score 3 goals.
Cisco scored all three goals, Jeremy had two assists and Chris F had an
assist ( really good looking assist ). Chris G. had a couple of pretty
saves as usual. We had more goal chances, but we just couldn't convert
it. We did a lot of things right in this game and the score reflects our
game. Overall, we played well against a quality team.
Our biggest problem was conditioning. We couldn't run entire 90 mins and
it started to show in the second half. I ask that all players run at
least 2 miles every week before the game. I think this can push us over
to our first W.
We didn't get a W, but our team played like we used to, playing our hearts
out.
The best thing about our team is FO babes. The FO babes are so cool that
the international players wanted to join the cheer with the babes. You can
always count on them for their support every game, rain or shine. It was
great that we were able to give 3 goals to cheer about.
Well there's no time to revel in past not so bad losses so on to this week's challenge, Monterey United. This team is characterized by their spectacular passing. They are a very smart, very patient team, we are in for another rough game.
We only had 5 people at our Tuesday practice and well you can guess how that was.
We had our meeting on Wednesday and we had about half the team there as usual. Now everyone except for 3 of our players work in the same building. We have our Wednesday meeting during lunch. Yours truly was more than a little miffed about the lack of attendance at practice or meetings. In fact, we don't even require attendance, we just ask that people let us know when they can't be there. We don't even get that. There was a lot of heated discussion about this at the meeting and we didn't get to work on any plays. Not one of our better meetings.
Practice today (Thursday) and we had about 7 or 8 people show up. We also had coach Z show up. Coach Z used to play on our team but after he suffered 2 concussions within a 4 week span we won't let him back until he sees a doctor and gets cleared. He knows that no doctor will clear him to play rec soccer so he hasn't gone. Coach Z used to be a DB college football coach so I thought he would make a fine coach for our sucky soccer team. We had a team vote and named him coach at the begining of the season. Coach Z has had some problems because people wouldn't listen to him and he has had some personal stuff going on and hasn't been able to really be a coach. But he was there last week and, like the rest of us, got reinvigorated about soccer and our team so he showed up tonight. We had a pretty good practice with some training going on for our goalies and some defensive drills.
We are going to be missing Chris F. who is the most in shape player we have. This guy can run and run and he's a pretty good soccer player to boot. We will also be missing Everett, who as you may have read earlier, had a really good game in the back field last week. He's gone for the next couple of weeks for personal stuff. Finally, although there may be other people not showing up that I don't know about, we will be missing Kristian who plays in the back with me in the middle. He pulled or ripped, I can't remember which, his groin at work last week. He says he will be out for 3 to 6 weeks. Some of us think he's done for the season, but we'll see....
So that's how it's shaping up going into the weekend. I'll let you know how we do, gentle reader, after the game.
